Now that I have a pair of these I feel I can make fun of them. Here is an opinion of the 5 Fingers from somebody outside of the Crossfit cult.

Ha Ha! I've been enjoying my 5 fingers- which I wear all weekend long, although I get tired of explaining them to strangers.
One draw-back to the Nike Free's that I discovered this weekend. I was sweating my way through my CrossFit Endurance WOD (brutal 3x 1 mile for time) in the HOT Indiana sun when I discovered that these shoes transmit the heat of the road directly to the soles of your feet. Harsh! Note to self: get my ass out of bed before the sun rises.

I've been contemplating getting a new pair of shoes for crossfit, seeing as my current pair are wearing massively thin (they were already old 2 months ago) and frankly they live on my porch during the day due to...certain qualities. Could someone let me know the pro's and cons of 5-fingers? I'm thinking it may be worth it to invest.

I have a pair of 5 fingers and they are okay. Though I am a bit paranoid about wearing them when crossfitting. Can't imagine dropping a weight on my foot!
The concept of 'barefoot' running takes time to get used to. I would wear them around your place before actually wearing them in a gym or elsewhere. It can take some time for your feet to get used to them.
A few other notes:
They are a bit hard to get on and off, but fit ridiculously well, like a glove for your feet. I am still struggling a bit to get used to them, but overall it is a very cool concept.

re: vibram 5 fingers
this is my second year with them, i think they're incredibly comfortable, most people think they are ugly.
i have the sprint and KSO model. I prefer the feel and look of the KSOs, but I have to say, the stink with them is much worse (regardless of washing). the main hypothesis i've seen is that they don't air out as well. I'm going to buy some toe socks to see if those help.
they take some getting used to (my calves were sore for the first week or two that i was wearing them).
I do wear them almost everywhere (in the summer) and I do all the crossfit workouts in them.

Five Fingers are taking over the world. My advice would be to cut whatever initial distances you think you are going to run in them in half or a third. It's tough to get yourself hitting mid-foot vs. your heel and may cause some calf soreness.
Did anyone notice the WCCF reference in the Journal this weekend? John Martinez who follows WCCF and posts here periodically posted in the comments of the "You be the trainer" article. John- Solid points and advice.

Bridgid - Good info on the Nike Free. Luckily, I haven't experienced that yet, but considering the race I am doing is in August, will certainly be something to watch out for. Nice to see someone else doing the CFE WODs...I just hope you were fortunate enough to avoid the foul and have to do the push-ups over the weekend!

Julie - I hope those t-shirts are "Cal-approved". If not, here is a quick link to with a how-to video:

Silly Drew. Cal doesn't actually cut the sleeves from his shirts. The sleeves run away in fear.
Posted by: Yaz | June 29, 2009 at 03:10 PM
That reminds me of a lot of girls I knew in high school. The whole running away in fear thing that is.

Drew --- will there be a camera check for the late night functions?
Posted by: Zeke | June 29, 2009 at 03:45 PM
Why would you want a camera check? I thought having pictures of yourself posted on the internet while at The Globe, wearing a bike helmet, with Hellboy-esque bruises on your forehead made you cool.

Dole,
I absolutely love my 5 fingers, and have been wearing them for over 2 years. They do take some getting used to, but I have found that they have eliminated virtually all of my previous foot ailments. They are designed for barefoot running and cause you to alter the way that you run. As Corey points out (a runner) you strike on the ball of your foot rather than the heel so the calves will suffer at first. The benefit is that you assume a natural running position that really takes the stress off of the knees and lower back. For everything else that we do they really translate a positive feeling with the floor - great for the Oly lifts. I am not the fastest nor the strongest but love the feeling of having them on in the gym.
I have two pairs - the Sprint and the KSO. I favor the Sprint and find that they are easy to put on. The KSO are a little more difficult to put on but they do a great job of keeping gravel out.
I know that you can buy them at Hanigs on Diversey and at their John Hancock lobby location. Have them fit you and see what you think. I do know that some people cannot wear them because of sizing discrepancies between the feet (one bigger than another). The Web site gives some great sizing tips.
Also take a look at the following it will give you a more detailed discussion of barefoot lifting.

Good luck!
