re: the article (love the typo in the link for the article)

[study is here, http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/122539667/abstract behind a paywall. if you have JSTOR access, it's probably there]

After an initial, "holy shit, that's scary/crazy," I have some further reactions:

1. BMI is used as the definition of obesity. That strikes me as near useless (or, if the believe this study's results, terrifying). I don't understand why they wouldn't use body fat comp.

2. It was performed on folks over 70. When does this loss of brain mass occur? Does the high BMI correlate with other, more important, factors?

3. Does brain atrophy come first (and lead to obesity)?

4. We now know brain tissue can regenerate. Are these effects reversible?

5. There was no cognitive differences between the non-obese and obese folks. What evidence for increased suscpectibilty to Alzheimer's is there?

etc.

OTOH, doing Crossfit makes my brain happy, but I assume that's some endorphin-type response.

Jacob

thanks, Jason. i thought that "sever brain degeneration" was just a caption for the photo. i'll go read the article!

Corey

Dingo- Sweet picture, not because you are in it (this time), but because you made it through that metcon with a 32kg bell. Way to get through it.

Brenda

Great, so I'm not just fat, I'm fat AND stupid, FANTANSTIC! At least I now have an excuse for some of the stupid things I do.

Cal

Dingo....a yeoman's effort last night bro. Pure guts.

Jacob

Dingo- you know me well enough to know that my verbal jab at you was meant only as a props, in a big way. we should all be so "sever"ly degenerated.

doogie

This article brings forth the following quote I learned as a kid, "Correlation does not equal causation."

Dingo

I actually did a research paper on this very subject this summer for grad school and there is a ton of research out there regarding this issue from all over the globe. My focus was on obese teens. The researchers based their findings on several different tests the students took over their school careers and came to their conclusions based on these test results.

Dingo

As far as the photo is concerned I know what you are thinking, and the answer is yes, I do like the look and feel of sweaters. Especially during brutal WOD's.

When I was fatter last summer the hair follicles were spaced out more because my stomach was so big however due to my weight loss they have gotten more closely situated. Thus the dense patch of Yetti Fur.

Jacob don't ever apologize for busting my stones. What do I look like somebody that goes to Bally's?

Thanks to all of the OLY lifters last night for supporting me through that WOD last night. It was greatly appreciated. My shoulders are very sore. I get shivers just thinking of the number combo 21-15-9.

Drew

Not sure I really understand this article...
Prior to CrossFit, I was definitely considered obese. However, I was also considered smart, witty, kicked ass at sodokus and puzzles, etc.

However, in the 7 months since I started, I am no longer obese, yet the only thing my mind can actually focus on for more than 60 seconds is CrossFit, CrossFit related topics, and how damn good the Kool-aid tastes.

Shout out for K - holy amazing 30 muscle-ups for time last night! Very inspirational to watch. Even while I was doing box jumps.

Jason,

Thank you for saying that BMI is a poor indicator for obesity. I've been working with youth obesity programs for a bit now and it is infuriating at how often big kids have been labeled obese when they are just frickin' big for their age. And you're right on in doubting the claims since it was performed on a group that was over 70.

I won't say that there isn't a staggering obseity problem in America, but studies like this one seem superfluous in actually changing the way people behave. The greater challenge in working to eliminate epidemic levels of obesity is to make general fitness pertinent in the lives of at-risk individuals; "framing" the issue in a different manner than just declaring inactivity and obesity as extremely dangerous to your health. (That was enough for me to get off my ass and be active, but for many people, it's not). As to how exactly we should bridge this gap, I have a general idea. But I should leave that to the book review section and not clog up the comments.

Drew

I forgot one other side effect of moving away from being obese. As Dingo, and anyone else at the 6:30 class on Wednesday can attest, I lost the ability to count.

I believe this actually qualifies as both a BC Type 1 (article) and BC Type 3 (life changing event) post.

Peyton

K- WTF ....banging out 30 muscle ups! Justin, sign her up for the affiliate team!!

Dingo- great pic. I hope everyone realizes how hard that exercise is! Btw, you look great!

Dan t- well said.

Jason

Slosher and K have inspired me. I have got to get past my 2 muscle-up wall. You guys rock.

K

Thx General! I have to admit, Slosher's achievement spurred me on.

And, although it had the unique effect of simultaneously being rewarding and sucking, I think I would've chosen it over burpees, box jumps and wall balls any day. Wall balls, after all, are my #1 nymesis.

Jason, go for it man! You'll have no idea if you can do it until you try. I certainly didn't think it was feasible...
