Dingo: AIIIGGGHH! It's your AOM Boo that's so scary. I echo the congrats on the wedding.
A couple comments on the article (which had some good stuff in it). There's a lot to say about it, but I only have a few minutes:
1. "It's innate in people to dislike what they see as a lack of attractiveness," he says. "It makes them think such people are worthy of derision. Very young kids have been shown to have a bias against their overweight peers."
I call shenanigans. This is complete BS. If beauty standards were innate they wouldn't change over time (in very short periods of time from an evolutionary standpoint) and they wouldn't vary across cultures (even within a country). [To see how rapidly they change, take a look at a modern movie set in the 1950s -- the women all look like they're goign to die of starvation. Then look at a movie made in the 1950s. Let alone Rubens, etc.] What's considered "beautiful" has a lot more to do with women's oppression (sexism) than our DNA. [And yes, I know there's standards for men too, but they are generally more lax (think about aging) and I think their origin lies as a corollary to the standards for women]
2. As Michael Pollan and others have talked about, a huge chunk of health/weight problems people in advanced industrial (and increasingly in industrializing) countries have is because the "Western" diet (modern food production) pushes out more traditional, healthier fare -- it's main positive feature is that it's cheaper and more conducive to people working ever longer hours.
3. There would be a three, but I'm out of time.
Paraphrasing Coco, I too want a daughter who wants to be strong, not skinny.

If you happen to check this post and are missing costume pieces, I have them. More specifically, I have a pair of lovely butterfly/fairy wings (MIchelle?) and what appears to be Bam Bam's club. I'll bring them with later or you can call me if you need them earlier.

Jason,
Thanks for the insightful connections between beauty images and sexism. I genuinely appreciate a man (or woman or gender queer person for that matter) who recognizes the inequities in social institutions when he sees them. Right on, brother.

K, leave the wings at WCCF, and I shall commandeer them.
